Making a Difference

Mr.Shah*, 65, came to the U.S. from India in 1999 to live with his daughter. When he saw a flyer, in his native language, about hot Indian meals at his community center, he became a regular. During the nutritional assessment, it was determined that Mr.Shah had many health problems and no health insurance.

With help in filling out applications, transportation and translation from the center’s service specialist, he was able to obtain medical assistance, Food Stamps and public aid. Subsequently, Mr.Shah became a U.S. citizen and now volunteers at the center. “I am happy that I live here,” says Mr.Shah, “where this agency serves their clients in their own native languages and understands ethics, values and cultural differences.”

Volunteer gifts of time and talent are vital to the success of our programs and services. With a variety of opportunities available, volunteers who team with AgeOptions can identify their niche and focus their work in areas that are the most satisfying to them. Volunteering can be an excellent transition into retirement and a rewarding way to give back to your community.

Volunteer opportunities include:

Red Tape Cutters and SMP programs and the Make Medicare Work Coalition — Helping people access benefits, understand prescription drug program options, and learn ways to protect themselves against Medicare fraud and abuse.

Aging Well project in the greater Lyons Township — Planning and leading activities and programs that help to create a community environment in which people can age well.

AgeOptions Board and Advisory Council — Providing leadership and guidance to AgeOptions and representing us in suburban Cook County communities.

Community-based agencies that work with older adults throughout suburban Cook County — Delivering meals to people who are homebound, serving at congregate meal sites, making phone calls and friendly visits to check on older adults, and assisting with administrative duties.
